Amazing historical monetary. It has 7 ancient churches and some big new churches. There is also a high mountain with a cave at the top of it where St Antony used to live.

A 1700-year-old Monastery, about three and half hours from Hurghada, really worth the visit. The head monk is a very charming old man who seems genuinely help to share the story of the place with all visitors. There you can see an old grinding mill, stunning views from the desert, old buildings that stood for centuries and were briefly occupied by bedouins but retaken and restored, the old church, the ancient mechanism that served as "entrance" to the inner area, and lots of other intetesting stuff. Highly recommended is the path to the cave where St. Anthony of Egypt used to live during his days. The path, although these days with steel steps, can be challenging for some, for it is without shade and in the middle of the desert. Take lots of water, comfortable clothes and a head cover. Although the 1700 steps can make you think twice, the views are awesome, and the little cave is really interesting (but not for the claustrophobic, I believe). On your way, be sure to divert from the way wherr three big wooden crosses stand. There is a path to that place, and the view is not to be missed.

Whaaauw, what an exceptional place to visit. Once entering through the main gate, you get accompanied to a waiting room, where one of the monks awaits you to guide you through the domain. Ancient churches and chapels await you with wall paintings from the 4th till the 13th century. Than it goes up to the mill, the juice-, grapes-, and olive mills and the water source. The visit takes about 1,5 hour. Additionally you can climb up to the cave where Saint-Antony used to live. (1 hour up, 45 minutes down)

Unique place! The oldest Christian monastry in the world. The monk who guide us was very polite, and explained us a lot of facts for the monastry.
