Memphis makes such a beautiful Sphinx and I enjoyed walking around the open air museum here to see other artefacts collected from the area. The massive statue of Ramses II is an interesting archaeological find with a fascinating story of recovering the massive stone likeness. There are a number of souvenir stands at Memphis as well if you are interest to pick up a tapestry, small sculpture, or scarf.

After visiting the Saqqara/Dashur pyramides it was an experience to visit Memphis, it is old but buzzling. Very different from New Cairo.

The Alabaster Sphinx of Memphis is on display in the garden of the open air museum in Memphis, the Mit Rahina Museum. It is also called the Calcite Sphinx. It is made of Calcite which looks almost like Alabaster. The ancient Egyptians believed that Calcite had a mystical connection with the Sun. Not much is known about which Pharaoh built it, but it is supposed to have been constructed around 1500BC. It is about 8meters long and 4meters in height. We had expected a bigger structure, after having seen the Sphinx at the Giza Necropolis. This museum is well known for it's more famous exhibit, the supine statue of Ramses2, than it is for the Sphinx. Lucky for us, it was a beautiful afternoon and not overcrowded, as most famous sites are in Egypt. It was a pleasure to walk around in the open air after seeing the gigantic statue of Ramses2. Apart from the Sphinx, there are a number of statues, and parts of old stone edifices placed in the open air. There are a number of souvenir shops selling stone and wood items, bags, scarves and small replicas of statues that you might want to look into. There are paid clean washrooms near the entrance as well as, clean drinking water. Though this museum does not fall within the heavy tourist traffic category, nevertheless, smaller groups tend to couple this with a day trip to Sakkara and Dahshur.
